Communion Offering: Africa University

This Sunday, September 5, our communion offering will go to Africa University. Since 1992, Africa University, the only United Methodist degree-granting university in Africa, has served and graduated hundreds of men and women from 20 countries. It is nurtured and funded by United Methodists through the Africa University Fund apportionment. The importance of this apportioned fund is its impact on the lives of students. In a continent torn by war, AIDS, poverty, cyclones, and other natural and human-made hardships, Africa University shines as a beacon of hope and light.
Please bring your offerings with you to the altar during communion this Sunday. Write "Africa University" in the memo of your check.

NOTE: The church office will be closed on Monday, September 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

Boy Scout Popcorn

One opportunity remains for you to get your Boy Scout Popcorn. Scouts from Pack 817 will be happy to assist you with your purchase of popcorn this coming Sunday, September 5. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Career Transition Networking Fellowship

The Career Transition Ministry is sponsoring a Networking Fellowship on Wednesday, September 15, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in Room 2011 of the Family Life Center. The speaker is Neil Anderson, a member of FUMCG and an experienced, outstanding networking resource. He will speak on Marketing Yourself and Networking for job seekers, members in career transition and anyone in the congregation who would like to improve their Networking ability. We welcome everyone! Please RSVP to Katherine Hunter at katherineh@fumcg.org. For more information and resources, visit our website.

Campus Angels Ministry

The Campus Angels Ministry keeps college students connected with the church. An adult volunteer (Campus Angel) is assigned a college student. You will send the college student notes and small care packages monthly letting them know that their church family is praying for their success and safety. We are currently looking for adult volunteers (Campus Angels) who would enjoy staying in touch with our young adults. All you need is a little time each month to send your student a note or a small care package. We will also meet at the end of each semester to put together care packages for finals week. If you are interested in becoming a Campus Angel, sign up on Check-In online or in this Sunday's bulletin. If you participated in this ministry last year, please resubmit for this school year. Question? Contact Lorrie Butts (lorrie.butts@gcisd.net) or Glenda Cherry (Glenda.cherry@gcisd.net).

Disciple IV: Under the Tree of Life

The Well with Dr. Cindy Ryan
Ladies, join us for the first Well gathering of the fall on Thursday, September 9, at 7:00 PM in the Family Life Center. Dr. Cindy Ryan will be our speaker, sharing "Don't Make Me Say it Again." We'll explore how God uses repetition (one author calls it "sacred echoes") to reach us through the noise and busyness and chaos we create. We hear certain messages or themes over and over again. By being more alert, we can understand these repetitive words from God. Rev. Rick Mang and his guitar-playing friends will serenade us in song and we'll have great food from Panera! The cost is $15 per person, which includes the program and meal. Tickets are on sale now online and in the church office through noon on Tuesday, September 7. You can also buy Season Tickets ($30 for September and November). Visit the Well web page to get your tickets now!

Good Grief Support Group
Of all the human experiences, one of the most devastating is the death of someone we love. Although grieving is an innate process, each of us goes through the pain of loss in our own way. The Good Grief Support Group, based on the booklet Good Grief by Granger E. Westberg, is a six-week journey in grief work that will include examination of patterns of grief, remembering with less pain and strengthening the ability to cope. The next Good Grief Support Group will begin Sunday, September 12. The group meets Sundays through October 17 (skipping Oct. 3) from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in Room 2011 of the Family Life Center. Visit our website for more information. Please RSVP to Katherine Hunter, 817-481-2559 x130 or katherineh@fumcg.org

Introducing The Roadmap

The Roadmap for children and youth is the culmination of the series of “What If” meetings about children and youth ministries. From the time your child was born, you probably had a plan in mind for how they would grow and mature. First Methodist Church also has a plan: a roadmap for the spiritual growth of your children from preschool through graduation. We are intentional about teaching spiritual disciplines, Bible knowledge and compassion for others. Leaders of the Children and Youth Ministries have worked to provide detailed information about what you can expect your child to learn and experience through each grade level. We have also incorporated our new missions focus - the “Villages” - throughout the Roadmap. Information about the roadmap - education, fellowship activities and service opportunities - can be found on a newly-developed portion of our website: www.firstmethodistgrapevine.org/roadmap. We look forward to sharing this faith journey with you and your child!

Back to School Fiesta a Success at the Grapevine Village
On Sunday evening, a Back to School Fiesta was held at the Shady Oaks Mobile Home Park (the Grapevine Village). Nachos, lemonade and popsicles were served. Children and youth of all ages enjoyed games and prizes, piñatas and having their faces painted. Back to School goodie bags were distributed to the residents. Our youth, tweens and many other church members helped host this event in partnership with our church members who live at Shady Oaks and are a part of our Hispanic Ministry. Principals and teachers from Silver Lake and Colleyville Heritage High School were also present to interact with students and their families. A big thank you to Joan O'Brien, Evangelism Chair, for organizing this event. Click here for more photos!
